Roundtable: #MeToo in China and Beyond
Location
Chrystal Macmillan Building (Seminar rooms 1+ 2), 15A George Square, University of Edinburgh
Since its appearance in 2018, the hashtag #MeToo has spread around the globe, and sparked individual and collective action against sexual assault and gender-based violence. This roundtable marks the launch of an exhibition in the School of Social and Political Science of materials tracing the history of the #MeToo movement in China inspired by similar exhibitions held in Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou and New York in 2019. Members of the Mushroom Sisters, a UK-based group of feminist student-activists, will talk about the exhibition and the activities it documents; we’ll have commentary reflecting on #MeToo elsewhere in the global south from SSPS staff members Hemangini Gupta and Gabriela Loureiro; and there will be time for Q&A and reflections from the audience. Sophia Woodman will be chairing the roundtable.
Sponsored by GENDER.ED and the School of Social and Political Science EDI Committee.
