Christian Ilbury

Christian (he/him) is a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at the University of Edinburgh. His work explores the relationship between digital cultures and language variation and change. Most of his research has examined the digital and linguistic practices of youth and queer people.

His research interests include:

Current and notable research projects/ publications:

The main project I have been working on considers variable patterns of language used by gay men in different interactional contexts. The project has included publications on the digital appropriation of African American Vernacular English by White gay British men and the commodification of a White working-class woman style in Instagram memes (Hun culture). More recently, I have been working with a former postgraduate student on style-shifting in gay men’s daily interactions in the socially conservative country of Singapore.
